Characters of Ayrburn - Trout Tickling

The waterfall that lies just a short climb from the Ayrburn Homestead is a wondrous place. The perfect spot to drink in the natural beauty of these parts. And the creek at the foot of the waterfall was once a prime destination for trout fishing. 

Although the fish that populate these waters are now protected, RM Paterson would - when the occasion called for it - cast his net and pull out generously-sized trout with which to delight his dinner guests. But this more traditional style of fishing isn't the practice that made Mill Creek famous. Instead, it is tickling that has cemented its colourful reputation. 

Trout tickling is a conveniently discreet way of snaring fish because it requires neither line or bait. All one needs do is rub the underbelly of a trout. A feather works well. But the delicate touch of finger against scales is just as effective. This rubbing motion will send the fish into a blissful trance - making it an easy mark for prompt water extraction. A boon for poachers in need of nourishment or children in search of mischief. 

Legend has it that many moons ago, a young boy ventured into Mill Creek with the ambition of catching two trout...simultaneously. His friends laughed at the very idea. And the boy, out of respect for the fish who had helped him become a living legend, put the trout back where they belonged. A talented fisherman and a kind soul to boot.
